EXECUTIVE OF THE WEEK: RACHEL NYAMBURA THONDU-MUGISHA,GENERAL MANAGER COMMERCIAL-NEXT MEDIA UGANDA

October 13, 2026

Some leaders collect mantras the way others collect framed certificates.

Rachel Nyambura Thondu-Mugisha has one, and it does real work: you either run the day, or the day runs you. In a newsroom-adjacent business where the schedule is set by breaking news, live broadcasts and advertisers who need answers yesterday, it reads less like a slogan and more like an operating manual.

It also explains how a woman who spent her early career in human resources, sales and business process outsourcing ended up steering the revenue engine of one of Uganda’s biggest media houses.

A career built across borders.

Her path was never a straight line up a single ladder.

Over more than sixteen years she moved between people management, selling and outsourced operations, three disciplines that rarely share an office, let alone a résumé.

A Makerere University graduate, she later earned an MBA in strategic business from Roehampton University in the United Kingdom and added a long list of professional certifications along the way.

The geography was just as restless.

Her work took her through Uganda, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates, with stops at Access Kenya, NFT Consult and Celeste Industries in Dubai.

That is a rare education for someone now selling advertising in Kampala.

It taught her to read different markets quickly, to tell when a client is buying reach and when they are buying belief, and to build teams that perform under pressure.

Most commercial heads learn one market well. She has had to learn several.

Turning a media house into a commercial ecosystem.

At Next Media she holds a seat on the Executive Committee, the group that sets direction across content, technology, finance, legal and operations.

Her brief is the bit every media owner worries about most: making the brands pay.

She has been central to commercialising the whole Next Media stable, which now stretches across television, radio, digital, events and production.

What stands out is that she has not treated that job as simple ad-slot arithmetic. Under her leadership the group has built properties that are platforms in their own right.

The NBS Housing Baraza gathered the housing conversation under one roof.

The Uganda Economic Forum gave business a stage and gave advertisers a reason to sit near the debate rather than just beside it.

Alongside these sit community-minded campaigns such as Taasa Obutonde and Linya Step, which show a commercial head willing to make social impact part of the sales proposition.

That is a sharper strategy than it first appears.

Plenty of media companies still sell airtime and hope for the best. Building owned events and purpose-led campaigns means selling something a competitor cannot simply copy.

Pressure with a safety net.

Colleagues and observers describe a culture she insists on: high-performing, but not brittle.

She wants her teams stretched and supported in the same breath, and anyone who has managed a sales floor knows how hard that balance is to hold. Targets are easy to set.

Keeping people hungry without burning them out is the real craft.

The view from here.

There is a regional sensibility running through all of this.

Her time across several markets has left her with an instinct for where business is heading, and she pairs it with a taste for execution over theory. She is more interested in the campaign that lands than the strategy deck that impresses.

For Uganda’s marketing community, her presence at the Exco table matters. Media buyers, brand managers and agency heads now have a commercial leader who understands the client’s problem as well as the broadcaster’s inventory.

If Next Media’s pitch to the market is We Inform to Transform, then Rachel Nyambura Thondu-Mugisha is the one making sure the transformation shows up on the balance sheet.

She is not waiting for the day to happen to her.

That is why she is our Executive of the Week.
