Emma Mugisha is a distinguished Ugandan banker and corporate leader with over 25 years of experience spanning retail, corporate, and investment banking. As Head of Retail and Digital Banking for Access Bank Plc’s African subsidiaries, she spearheads the bank’s retail strategy across 15 markets, driving digital transformation, SME growth, and customer-centric innovation. Her leadership is central to Access Bank’s ambition of becoming Africa’s most respected retail and digital banking institution.
Career Journey
Emma’s career began in 1996 at Faulu Uganda, where she worked as a loan officer, gaining firsthand insight into grassroots financial inclusion. She later joined Citibank Uganda as Treasury Marketing Unit Head, before moving to Barclays Bank Uganda and Kenya, where she rose to Country Treasurer and Industry Head for Trade & Services.
Her most prominent tenure was at Stanbic Bank Uganda, where she served as Executive Director and Head of Business Banking, Corporate & Investment Banking, and Client Solutions. At Stanbic, she was instrumental in expanding SME financing, strengthening corporate banking solutions, and embedding digital channels into client engagement.
Today, at Access Bank Plc, Emma leads retail and digital banking across multiple African subsidiaries, ensuring that Access Bank’s retail offerings are not only competitive but also inclusive, innovative, and aligned with the evolving needs of African consumers and businesses.
Governance & Board Leadership
Beyond her executive roles, Emma is deeply engaged in governance and financial inclusion. She serves as Chairperson of the Board of Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSD Uganda), where she provides strategic oversight for initiatives that expand access to finance for under served communities. She has also chaired the Programme Investment Committee and the Human Resources & Compensation Committee, reinforcing her reputation as a leader who balances institutional growth with human capital development.

Social Impact & Advocacy
Emma is equally passionate about social impact. She has supported Nyaka, an organization aiding children and families affected by HIV/AIDS, and contributes to Evolving Woman Uganda, which empowers women through fundraising and partnerships. Her advocacy reflects a commitment to inclusive growth that extends beyond banking into community development.
