Some leaders build institutions, others transform them. Dr. Patricia Adongo Ojangole has done both.

As Managing Director of Uganda Development Bank (UDB), Dr. Ojangole has spent more than a decade redefining the role of development finance in Uganda. Since taking the helm in 2013, she has led the transformation of UDB from a relatively modest development finance institution into one of the country’s most influential drivers of industrialization, enterprise growth, and socio-economic development. Under her leadership, the bank’s asset base has grown dramatically, strengthening its capacity to finance projects that create jobs, stimulate production, and drive long-term economic growth.

What distinguishes Dr. Ojangole is not only her technical expertise, but also her belief that finance should be a catalyst for national transformation. Through her leadership, UDB has expanded its reach to key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, and value addition, helping businesses access affordable long-term capital while supporting Uganda’s broader development agenda. She is widely credited with restoring stakeholder confidence in the institution and positioning UDB as a trusted partner for both public and private sector investment.

Before joining UDB, Dr. Ojangole built an impressive career in banking and risk management, serving in senior audit leadership positions within the Standard Bank Group. Her work took her across several African markets, giving her broad exposure to governance, finance, and institutional management. These experiences shaped the disciplined and results-driven leadership style for which she is known today.

Her professional accomplishments are matched by an equally strong academic foundation. Dr. Ojangole holds a PhD in Development Finance from Stellenbosch Business School in South Africa, where her research focused on the relationship between private sector credit, structural transformation, employment, and inclusive growth. She also holds a Master of Philosophy in Development Finance, an Executive MBA from ESAMI, and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Makerere University. A Fellow of ACCA UK, she is also a member of ICPAU and the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Her impact has earned recognition far beyond Uganda’s borders. In 2025, she made history as the first woman elected Chairperson of the Association of African Development Finance Institutions (AADFI), a testament to the respect she commands across the continent’s development finance landscape. In the same year, she was named African Banker of the Year, highlighting her contribution to sustainable and transformative banking in Africa.

Whether championing green finance, supporting SMEs, or advancing Uganda’s industrialization agenda, she remains focused on one goal: ensuring that finance delivers meaningful impact for people and communities.
