Mungoma Moves to Next: The Radio Man Who Kept Capital Relevant Gets the Keys to a Bigger House

Some appointments announce themselves quietly, and some arrive with the unmistakable sound of an industry rearranging its furniture. Peter Jackson Mungoma’s move to Next Media Group belongs firmly to the second kind.

The Board of Next Media Group has named him Deputy Group CEO and Chief of Radio, a dual mandate that puts one of East Africa’s most seasoned radio operators at the centre of a group spanning radio, television and digital. For a man who has spent the better part of a decade teaching a radio business to survive, and then thrive, in an era that keeps predicting the death of radio, it is a fitting next chapter.

The Capital Radio years.

Mungoma took over as Chief Executive Officer of the Capital Radio Group in 2014, at a moment when the media industry was changing faster than most boardrooms could follow. Audiences were fragmenting across platforms, advertisers were rethinking where their money should live, and the old assumptions about broadcasting were being tested daily.

What followed is the part of the story the Next Media Board clearly noticed. Under his stewardship, Capital Radio strengthened its market leadership and grew its audience across both traditional and digital platforms. Revenue growth was sustained rather than spiky, which in media is the harder trick.

Corporate governance was tightened, and the station built high-value partnerships with government, the private sector and development partners.

Capital Radio did not merely hold its ground; it stayed relevant, and in a fast-moving market that is the more demanding achievement.

A career built across borders and sectors.

Mungoma’s résumé refuses to sit neatly in one lane. Across more than two decades, he has worked in media, broadcasting, telecommunications, consulting, renewable energy and automotive, with a common thread of market entry, business turnarounds and commercial growth. He has led renewable energy ventures in Tanzania and driven subscriber growth in pay television with MultiChoice and others, work rooted in business development and commercial strategy.

It is the kind of background that tends to produce leaders who read a balance sheet and a content schedule with equal fluency, and that combination matters at a group trying to grow audiences and revenue at the same time.

The credentials behind the commercial instinct.

Academically, he holds a BA (Hons) and an MBA in Marketing from Makerere University, and has completed executive education at Harvard Business School.

His radio-specific credentials are unusually deep: he is a Radio Marketing Professional (RMP) and a Certified Radio Marketing Consultant (CRMC), both awarded by the Radio Advertising Bureau in Dallas, Texas. Few executives in the region can claim that level of formal grounding in the economics of the medium they run.

What Next Media says it is getting.

Group CEO Kin Kariisa was direct about what the Board values. “Peter brings commercial discipline and leadership depth to Next Media Group,” he said. “His record at Capital Radio practically shows what sustained growth and strong governance are. We welcome him as we build the next chapter for our radio, television and digital platforms.”

Note the phrase “next chapter.” It signals that this is not a caretaker appointment.

Next Media is investing in a leader whose reputation rests on commercial sustainability, innovation, digital transformation and operational excellence, and expects him to apply that thinking across the whole group, not just the radio stations under his direct charge.

The Evolve Africa view.

There is a reason this appointment will be watched closely beyond the walls of Next Media. Radio remains the most trusted and widely consumed medium across much of East Africa, yet it is also the one most often asked to justify its future.

Mungoma has spent years answering that question with results rather than rhetoric.

He arrives to keep doing what his record suggests he does best: building high-performing teams, designing result-oriented frameworks, forging strategic partnerships and delivering long-term value for stakeholders. He remains, by his own account and by his track record, a committed advocate for the continued evolution of the media and communications industry.

The hard part now begins. Running radio inside a multi-platform group means balancing legacy audiences with digital ambition, and competing for advertiser attention in a market that has never been more crowded. If the Capital Radio years are any guide, Next Media has placed its bet on someone who understands that relevance is never inherited, only earned again each year.

Evolve Africa congratulates Mr. Mungoma on his appointment and will follow his tenure at Next Media Group with interest.
